If I had simply invested my entire $22,500 in March 2021, my final value would have been approximately $33,184. That’s a $1,337 difference. I “lost” about 4% of my portfolio by spreading the investment out over time.

But here’s the counterfactual I can’t calculate easily: if I had dumped the entire $22,500 into the market in March 2021 and then watched it lose 25% over the following year—which happened—would I have kept investing?
